Mayweather: Cotto and Canelo hit harder than Maidana
By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) did a good job of beating Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) by standing and trading shots last Saturday night to earn a tough 12 round majority decision in their Showtime pay-per-view televised fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. But after the fight, Mayweather had less than glowing words to say about the hard hitting Argentinian fighter.
Mayweather compared Maidana to a WWE professional wrestler at the post-fight press conference, and said that he had done a good job of kneeing him and holding and hitting. Canelo Alvarez says he’ll silence Erislandy Lara

Canelo Alvarez vowed to silence what he considers to be a trash-talking Erislandy Lara when they meet on July 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Mexican star also weighed in on the potential Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Marcos Maidana rematch, hoping it's not as dirty as the first bout.
Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 knockouts) spoke during a Tuesday media workout in San Diego in advance of his bout with Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs), whom he said has "talked a lot" and "disrespected all Mexicans."
"Erislandy Lara has talked a lot of trash, and that's why he's gotten this opportunity," said Alvarez, who turns 24 on July 18. "He said a lot of things in the media and on Twitter and in various other social media." Read full Story...

Floyd Mayweather Jr. traditionally competes on the weekends of Mexican holidays Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day in May and September, respectively.
In his past two majority decision victories, Mayweather (46-0, 26 knockouts) added Maidana's WBA welterweight belt to THE RING and WBC championships he already owned and unified Saul Alvarez's WBC junior middleweight title with his RING and WBC championships.
But during a Wednesday conference call promoting his July 12 bout against southpaw Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 knockouts), Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) said he intends to regain the dates that he feels belong to his Mexican countrymen.
"Yes, of course, I want to re-take those dates and bring them back," said Alvarez, who turns 24 on July 18. "Those dates are Mexican dates. For next year, I will be fighting and I want to be fighting on those dates." Read full Story...

Erislandy Lara once called Canelo Alvarez "a baby" for not accepting his challenge. The Cuban southpaw also interrupted Alvarez during a post-fight press conference and generally "talked a lot" and "disrespected all Mexicans," according to Alvarez.
"The press conference where Lara got up on stage, that definitely bothered me," said Alvarez, during a recent interview. "I'm not one of those fighters to do that type of thing. Him talking so much was the straw that broke the camel's back. That's why we're fighting now."

Before I get to that just a quick program note that I just got, Showtime’s All Access Canelo vs. Lara, the first segment will be Friday, June 27th at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time and Pacific Time. So just please make note of that. And for this call today we are going to start with the opening Pay-Per-View bout, which is between Johan Perez and Mauricio Herrera.

Terence Crawford-Yuriokis Gamboa May Ignite Bigger Sparks than Canelo Alvarez-Erislandy Lara

Here’s a question for you. Will the Showtime pay-per-view bout between Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara on July 12 be a better fight than the HBO showdown this weekend between Terence Crawford and Yuriokis Gamboa? If it is, that will be the exception that proves the rule, because most of the really sensational contests of the last couple of decades were given away to subscribers.
There’s no direct correlation between excitement and pay-per-view dollars. In fact, the pay-per-view economic model is to boxing what a dime bag is to a junky. It’s a quick fix that digs the sport into a deeper hole, driving away both existing and potential fans. PPV cards are just another example of short-term corporate thinking, a rampant disease these days.
Oddsmakers have favored the house fighters, Canelo and Crawford, in both contests.
Interesting that the main events this weekend and July 12 both feature Cubans. You could probably fit all the American fans of Cuban fighters in a Greyhound bus. Canelo is in tough against Lara, 19-1-2 (12 KOs), but don’t expect him to break any PPV records against this opponent. There is no meaningful title on the line. Read full Story...

Roach: Cotto would KO Mayweather now
By Chris Williams: Miguel Cotto’s win over WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s) has trainer Freddie Roach and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum both believing that Cotto is a new man and is better than ever was before. And they both believe that Cotto would beat Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) right now if he were to agree to give him a second fight.It’s hard to understand why Mayweather would fight Cotto again because he already beat him by a lopsided 12 round decision in 2012, and Mayweather doesn’t waste time going over old ground to keep fighting the same guy over and over and over again like some fighters do. Mayweather moves on each time he picks up a pelt.
When asked if Cotto could beat Mayweather now, Roach said “He knocks Mayweather out.”
The look on Roach’s face when he said that was priceless. He looked almost angry. Roach looks like he really wants the Mayweather fight for Cotto, but the thing is it’s already over with after Mayweather took Cotto’s scalp in 2012. Cotto gave it his best shot but he didn’t have the talent to do the job, and he ended up getting beaten and almost knocked out by Mayweather.
“I think his legs are gone,” Roach said to the media about Mayweather. “He doesn’t move anymore. He says he wants to please the fans. I think that’s [expletive]. I think he’s shot. I don’t think he’ll fight any of my guys.”
For a shot fighter, Mayweather sure did look good in beating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September, didn’t he? I would favor the 23-year-old Canelo over Cotto any day of the week. Cotto could throw left hooks all night long, and I still believe Canelo will knock him out within 8 rounds in an easier fight than his win over Alfredo Angulo. If Mayweather was a shot fighter, then how is it he beat Canelo, Robert Guerrero and Marcos Maidana in his last three fights?
Roach obviously would like to get the Cotto-Mayweather II fight, because it would be a substitute for the fight that he failed to get with Mayweather-Pacquiao fight not happening, but I don’t think it would make any difference. Cotto would still likely get clowned by Mayweather, and Roach’s advice would be useless for Cotto because of the adjustments that Mayweather would be constantly making during each round. Cotto would need to wait until the ends of each round for Roach to tell him something like ‘move your head more,’ but Mayweather will adapt to things like that in the opening seconds of each round and end up dominating Cotto.
