Oscar De la Hoya warns Garcia, Peterson and Jacobs of underdogs

RING junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, IBF 140-pound beltholder Lamont Peterson and middleweight standout Danny Jacobs all have a chance to lose despite facing extreme underdogs when they return to action on Aug. 9, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De la Hoya told media members during a Wednesday press conference at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Garcia (28-0, 16 knockouts) is coming off a disputed majority decision victory over Mauricio Herrera on March 15 and will defend his RING, WBA and WBC championships against Rod Salka (19-3, 3 KOs).

'Pacquiao no longer a mythical beast'

MANILA, Philippines – Retired boxer and boxing trainer Jeff Mayweather claims that Manny Pacquiao is no longer the "mythical monster" of yore that tore down some of the best fighters of his era.

Mayweather, an uncle of current pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr., said it was Pacquiao’s run against Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton that made the Filipino boxer a superstar.

He, however, said that Pacquiao’s boxing prowess significantly diminished in recent years.

“Pacquiao had a short run knocking out guys and everybody jumped on his bandwagon and made him this big huge star — when he beat Cotto, Margarito, De La Hoya and Hatton. Since that time, what has he really done?” Mayweather said in an interview with "On The Ropes Boxing Radio."

California lawmakers honor Oscar De La Hoya

California lawmakers on Thursday honored Oscar De La Hoya, nicknamed the Golden Boy of boxing, for his leadership and contributions to the state.

De La Hoya, the son of Mexican immigrants, received proclamations from Sen. Kevin de Leon and former Assembly Speaker John Perez, both Democrats from Los Angeles. They said De La Hoya has helped California's economy by creating Golden Boy Promotions, the nation's first boxing promotional company owned by a Hispanic-American.

He also has invested in his community of East Los Angeles by establishing a foundation to support a charter school, a medical center and after-school programs to lead youth away from gangs and drugs.

De La Hoya, an Olympic gold medalist and winner of 10 world titles, thanked lawmakers for the recognition. Earlier this month, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Read full Story...

Golden Boy seeking damages from Schaefer

Multiple sources are reporting that Golden Boy Promotions is seeking $50 million in damages from former CEO Richard Schaefer. The case will not go to court, but instead will be decided by arbitration.

Things turned sour this year between Golden Boy President Oscar de la Hoya and Schaefer, who had been the Golden Boy CEO from its beginning in 2002. Schaefer ran the company while Oscar spent several years battling personal demons, but this year Oscar returned and decided he wanted to take a more active role. Schaefer resigned from Golden Boy on June 2.

While the specifics of the complaint against Schaefer aren’t known, it’s believed that any alleged damages would revolve around Schaefer often promoting major Golden Boy events that benefited the careers of Al Haymon-managed fighters who were not under contract to Golden Boy.
