Algieri got schooled by Professor Pacquiao, says Freddie Roach

Prior to Manny Pacquiao's fight with Chris Algieri, the Filipino ring icon's trainer Freddie Roach was vocal in saying that the American fighter didn't stand a chance. On Sunday, Roach was proven right as Pacquiao completely dominated the fight, knocking down Algieri six times en route to a dominant decision win. After the fight, Roach couldn't help but give one more jab to the Algieri camp. "The master boxer was given a master class by Professor Pacquiao," said Roach. Algieri holds a master's degree and an ambition to become a doctor once his boxing days are over. All week in the build-up, his trainer Tim Lane had been declaring that he would destroy Pacquiao by "master boxing". — Report from Agence France-Presse

Floyd Mayweather's son: 'My father is a coward'

It isn't a word usually associated with an undefeated professional boxer who has won championship titles across five weight divisions. But for a son who was a witness to his father's beating of his mother four years ago, "coward" is an apt term to describe Floyd Mayweather Jr.

In an article published on USA Today, Koraun Mayweather, the fighter's eldest son with former partner Josie Harris, recalls the night his mother was attacked by the boxer in 2010.

"(My dad) said to lock my door and stay in my room," said Koraun, who is now 15 years old. "I sat there and thought about what I was going to do next. Just for like a minute."

Harris was asleep when Mayweather arrived with an associate, James McNair, at around 4 a.m. The boxer, agitated by the fact that his former partner was dating another man, beat her in front of their then 11-year-old son.

"I ran and I tried to go through the front door to go to the (security) gate," Koraun said of his actions during that night. "But then his friend (McNair) came through the door and blocked off the stairway for me to go through."

The boy then went back to his room, locked the door, and got out of the house through his bathroom to call for help.

"I just told (the guard) that my mom was getting hurt and to call the ambulance and the police," he said.

Four years later, Koraun is still seeing his father every once in while. Mayweather recently gifted him a golf cart for his birthday, but the boy said he is still coming to terms with what his father did, especially with the boxer's continuous denial.

"He is a coward," he said.

After everything he had seen, Koraun, now 15 years old, has no plans of taking after his father's footsteps in the boxing world.

"I find (boxing) boring. It is just like how people sit in the ring and fight for 12 rounds and it gets boring after a while," he said. "Sometimes they run."

Chris Algieri is ’110 per cent’ prepared for Manny Pacquiao after ‘strenuous’ 10-week training camp

Chris Algieri arrives in Macao ahead of Manny Pacquiao challenge and discusses everything from handsomeness to Zab Judah

UST one day after arriving in Macao, undefeated WBO light-welterweight champion Chris Algieri resumed his promotional roadwork for the biggest fight of his professional life – challenging WBO welterweight champion, Manny Pacquiao.

On a busy Sunday in the St. Mark’s Square section of the Shoppes at Venetian, Algieri made a public appearance where was greeted by hundreds of fans, posed for photos and answered questions about his career and this Saturday’s battle with Pacquiao.

“With one million square feet of retail space and over 350 stores at the Shoppes at Venetian I think I can get in my daily roadwork and my Christmas shopping, all at the same time,” said Algieri to the delight of fans and shop owners alike. “I love Macao. It was great during my last visit on the promotional tour and it is even better this time. I am glad to be able to spend more time here.

“I worked hard for over 10 weeks in the most strenuous and productive training camp of my career. I had a lot of different sparring partners, including Zab Judah, giving me different looks to prepare me for anything Pacquiao decides to throw at me. I am 110 per cent prepared for our fight.”

When asked how a fighter could be so handsome, Algieri responded, “Every time I enter the ring I look to improve and perfect my master-boxer style of fighting – utilising the space inside the ring to my advantage. Good defence is the key to preserving my handsomeness.” Laughter and shrieks from his female fans greeted the underdog’s words.

Algieri concluded his public appearance by presenting three contest winners with autographed boxing gloves and posing for photographs with them.

Algieri will resume light training today – Monday – and meet with the first wave of U.S. media to arrive in the afternoon.

Money May’s Condition For The Dream Match Is Pacquiao Must Sign Up With Mayweather Promotions

By Vittorio Hernandez | September 4, 2014 2:11 PM EST

Despite the disclosure last week by Top Rank Promotions chief Bob Arum that Showtime/CBS and HBO are discussing the possibility of having two Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather bouts in 2015, Money May doused cold water on the fight.

He told Black Sports Online writer Kel Dansby at a media event at his Las Vegas gym that he would only agree to face the Filipino champ in the ring if the congressman will sign with his Mayweather Promotions.

With Mayweather's condition, the dream match is next to dead because  Pacquiao;s contract with Top Rank runs until December 2016, which means the earliest time the bout could take place is January 2017 when Mayweather turns 40 and Pacquao would be 38 by then.

In response to Mayweather's latest demand, Pacquiao replied, quoted by the Los Angeles Times, "I want to give the people what they want, the fight with Mayweathere, but what can I do if he doesn't want to fight?"

Pacquiao added, "He's ducking another opponent, and it's known all over the world who he should fight. So ... I feel sorry for him. What he needs is ... to know how to communicate with people. That's why I'm so happy and have peace of mind."

For the fight to happen before the two boxers get too old, Arum said there should be cooperation between HBO, Pacquiao's pay-per-view network, and Showtime, where Mayweather is signed up.

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather should give the public what they want - AND pocket at least $300m between them by boxing in the richest fight in history

The initial reaction when Manny Pacquiao announced that he will quit the ring in 2016 was to despair that the fight against Floyd Mayweather which the world has been waiting an eternity to see had been scuppered once and for all.
The reverse may be the case. Not least because the Pac-Man was actually deferring his retirement date.
The last time I discussed the matter with Pacquiao he talked of going into full-time Philippines politics next year.
Bowing out: Pacquiao has deferred his retirement to 2016, raising possibility of a fight with Mayweather
Bowing out: Pacquiao has deferred his retirement to 2016, raising possibility of a fight with Mayweather
Future plans: The Filipino boxer wants to go into politics in his homeland after he retires in 2016
Now speculation is on the rise in the US that Floyd Mayweather may be preparing the ground for a spectacular climax to both his and the Pac-Man’s career.
First, as he agreed to his September 13 rematch with Marcos Maidana, Mayweather went public with a teaser for us to expect a surprise announcement for his ensuing fight, scheduled for next May.
Since Amir Khan is hoping that will be when he gets his overdue shot at the Money man, nobody got over-excited.
But an alternative scenario has arisen from the fall-out following a huge promotional upheaval in American boxing.
Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya, after splitting with long-time partner Richard Schaefer, has brokered a peace with Bob Arum’s Top Rank outfit which should lead to big fights between boxers in each of those stables.  Read full Story >>>

Amir Khan: ‘Fighting Mayweather like chess but Pacquiao would be harder’

Amir Khan, pictured at his gym in Bolton, could fight Robert Guerrero or Devon Alexander in December. Photograph: Colin McPherson for the Guardian

amir khan gym boltonMy nose is a little bruised and bent but only I can tell how bad it is,” Amir Khan says as he smiles ruefully when reminded that nine years ago this summer he made his debut as a professional boxer. Khan tweaks his fighter’s nose gently as if he cannot believe how much he has endured since joining the paid ranks of this battered old business as an Olympic silver medallist and teenage sensation in July 2005.

“So much has happened since then,” he says. “I’ve come back from losses and won world titles. I’ve boxed in the UK and America, won fight of the year and moved up three weight classes. I’ve achieved so much and I’m still only 27. But I feel fresh, which is amazing when you think of all the hard fights and hard training. I’ve been boxing since I was eight and that’s a long time to take punches day after day.”

Khan is engaging and eloquent and, like most boxers, he prefers a genuine conversation to a conventional question-and-answer routine. Being hit in the face also instils a rare candour in fighters like Khan. “I’m in a sport where one punch can change your life,” he says intently at his gym in Bolton. “I understand why my mum and my wife can’t bear to watch me fight. There’s a lot of blood, a lot of pain. I’m a fighter but I find it very hard to watch my brother [Haroon – an unbeaten super-flyweight with a professional record of 5-0] because there’s nothing you can do to help him. It must be hell for my mum.” Read full Story>>>

Bernard Hopkins vs. Sergey Kovalev on November 8th, possibly in Atlanta City or NY

SERGEY KOVALEV Hopkins Kovalev Hopkins vs. Kovalev bernard hopkins By Jim Dower: WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) did his part to earn his unification match against IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) by crushing challenger Blake Caparello (19-1-1, 6 KOs) by a 2nd round knockout last Saturday night at the Revel Resort, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Now that Kovalev’s light work is out of the way, his unification bout against the 49-year-old Hopkins will be taking place on HBO on November 8th, either in Atlantic City, New Jersey at the Boardwalk Hall, or at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to Dan Rafael.

Hopkins signed the contract for the fight last Friday and the fight is a done deal. The only thing that needs to be determined is the venue.

“He [Hopkins] can teach me because he is very experienced,” Kovalev said to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. “I am not scared to fight him, even to lose to him. He’s an ‘Alien.’ But I am the ‘Krusher,’ and I will send him to mars.”

You have to see this as being a potentially difficult one for Hopkins, because even if he wins, he’s probably going to need to go the full 12 round distance to get the victory. Hopkins hasn’t knocked out an opponent since he stopped Oscar De La Hoya in the 9th round in their fight in 2004. De La Hoya was moving up in weight to face the bigger Hopkins at middleweight, and he didn’t have the size to fight at a high level in that weight class.

Kovalev is a natural light heavyweight and a lot younger and stronger than Hopkins. Even if Hopkins beats Kovalev, he’s going to need to take 12 rounds of heavy shots from him. As good as Hopkins’ defense is, he’s not going to be able to make Kovalev miss for 12 rounds. He’s going to get hit with a lot of solid blows to the head and body.

No one has ever gone the full 12 round distance with Kovalev during his career, and it’s going to be asking a lot of the nearly 50-year-old Hopkins to withstand 12 punishing rounds to beat Kovalev by a decision. This isn’t Kelly Pavlik. Kovalev is a better version of Pavlik with more close range power. Pavlik was a long range puncher and didn’t have an inside game like Kovalev.

You’ve got to give Hopkins a lot of credit for taking this fight, because he’s not fought a good fighter since his loss to Chad Dawson in 2012. He’s won his last three fights against Karo Murat, Beibut Shumenov and Tavoris Cloud, but those are flawed fighters that aren’t anywhere near the same talent level that Kovalev has.

Overcoming the fear of Kovalev and Golovkin

By Gav Duthie:
SERGEY KOVALEV gennady golovkin There are some fighters who are so revered that they can have their opponent beaten before they even step in the ring. FEAR can be a boxers greatest weapon but it can also be a major obstacle. Some of our major talents today like Sergey Kovalev and Gennady Golovkin are struggling to get the fights they deserve as a result.
Fear

The obvious example is Mike Tyson. When all the promoters, managers and ring girls stepped out of the ring you are faced with an opponent who has nothing on his mind but destroying you. Mike Tyson was powerful but it was his stare, the thought that he could kill you, destroy you in the ring. Read full Story >>>

Finally, a sign that Mayweather could be working with Top Rank Again

By Idris Morrey:
Mayweather Maidana 2 Mayweather vs. Maidana 2 marcos rene maidana floyd mayweather jr Recently, WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) declared he has a special opponent in mind for the fans after the September 13 rematch with Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs). The pound for pound long reigning champion called it a surprise to mark on the calenders and fans have not stopped guessing. Media houses, popular blogs and our very own Boxing News 24 paraded possible names for the May 2014 showdown but it all pointed at Bob Arums’ stable of Top Rank.

A photo circulating around the social media today could be confirming our guesses. A Money team labelled van was spotted outside Top Rank gym. It is now clear that Mayweather Promotions and Bob Arum of Top Rank could be talking business again. And what a good reunion it could be for both of these boxing powerhouses who posses arguably the best boxers in the sport right now. Read full Story >>>

Rios was unable to attend the post-fight press conference due to an injured shoulder or collarbone, as well as eye injury.

Vargas Novikov Vargas vs. Novikov Rios Chaves Rios vs. Chaves Diego Chaves brandon rios In a fight that was filled by fouling by both fighters, Brandon Rios (32-2, 23 KOs) defeated Diego Chaves (23-2, 19 KOs) by a 9th round disqualification tonight at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The fight was halted by referee Vic Drakulich in the 9th round following a head lock. Rios said he was pocked in the eye by Chaves.

Drakulich won the fight for Rios, because he was on his to his third consecutive defeat if not for the ref disqualifying Chaves. At the time of the stoppage, Chaves was ahead on the judges’ scorecards by a 75-74 and 75-74, while the third judge had it 75-74 for Rios. If not for Drakulich taking two points away from Chaves, Rios would have been trailing on all three judges’ scorecards. Rios should be thanking Drakulich for saving his career tonight.
