On This Day: Ross Puritty earns draw with Tommy Morrison that leads to victory over Wladimir Klitschko

AMES SLATER CATCHES UP WITH THE HEAVYWEIGHT JOURNEYMAN FAMOUS FOR UPSETTING THE ODDS

TWENTY years ago today (July 28) an unheralded fighter from Phoenix, Arizona scored the first meaningful result of a pro career that, at the time, was so-so at best at 8-8(6). Ross Puritty, seen as a tough but beatable journeyman by Tommy Morrison and his team, surprised ‘The Duke’ – who was three wins removed from his humiliating first round blast-out at the hands of Michael Bentt – and dropped him twice before holding the former WBO champion to a 10-round draw.

Before this fight, Puritty had been beaten by the likes of Cleveland Woods (in Puritty’s second pro outing) King Ipitan, Brian Nielsen, Kirk Johnson and four other less well known heavies.  Read full Story>>>

Shawn Porter hoping to get Mayweather fight after Brook

By Scott Gilfoid:

Brook Porter Brook vs. Porter shawn porter kell brook floyd mayweather jr In his media conference call today, IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) said that the guy he wants next after he beats Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) is a unification fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Porter isn’t overlooking Brook, but he’s not all that concerned about him. He’s studied Brook in depth and sees an upright, rigid fighter with a very basic fighting style that he’s going to expose in their fight next month on August 16th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Taishan Dong, a 6-11 Chinese heavyweight, could be boxing’s next big thing

It’s not every day a mountain walks into your office.

Yet in a span of seven months, those first steps into George Gallegos’ law firm in Monterey Park will have led to a giant stride into a boxing ring in San Francisco.

The journey is as intriguing as the thought of 6-foot-11, 285-pound Chinese heavyweight Taishan Dong making his professional boxing debut Friday night in a four-round bout against Ronny Hale (2-5) at Longshoremen’s Hall on Fisherman’s Wharf.

Dong, who is being dubbed “The Great Wall,” will appear first on the seven-fight card, which will be televised at 7 p.m. on Fox Sports 1. Read full Story >>>

Pacquiao with everything to lose in Algieri fight

By Chris Williams:
Pacquiao Algieri Pacquiao vs. Algieri Chris Algieri manny pacquiao Top Rank promoter Bob Arum may have done his No.1 money fighter Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) in a small way by matching him against obscure fighter Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) in their fight on November 22nd in Macao, China, but Arum ultimately is putting the 35-year-old Pacquiao in a position where his career is going to be on the brink of implosion should he lost to the 5’10” Algieri.

The casual boxing fans, the ones that will be purchasing the Pacquiao-Algieri fight on HBO pay-per-view, have no clue who Algieri is. The ones that do know who he is are largely unimpressed with his power and overall talent. Read full Story...

ZOU SHIMING EYES WORLD TITLE FIGHT

Following an impressive performance in his first ten round bout, popular Chinese Olympic two-time Champion Zou Shiming is eyeing a world title fight next.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports from Las Vegas that Zou Shiming “has come a long way” and credited celebrated trainer Freddie Roach who he said, “has done a great job.”

He said that it looks like the undefeated Zou Shiming who won a unanimous ten round decision against Luis De La Rosa in Macau last Saturday will fight for the world title but said “it's up to Freddie who he fights.”

It is likely that should Zou Shiming fight for the title he would take on IBF champion Amnat Ruenroeng, also a former Olympian who won the title by a twelve round split decision over Kazuto Ioka of Japan last May 7 after earlier grabbing the vacant title from the Philippines Rocky Fuentes with a twelve round unanimous decision on January 22 this year. Mares wins snoozer; Vargas TKOs Juanma in 3; Herrera wins WBA interim 140lb belt

By Butch Gottlieb and Miguel Maravilla at ringside

Former three division world champion Abner Mares (27-1-1, 14 KOs) returned from his KO loss to Jhonny Gonzalez 11 months ago to outpoint Jonathan “Polvo” Oquendo (24-4, 16 KOs) in a rather dull ten round super featherweight bout. Mares, now with trainer Viril Hunter in his corner, was cut over the left eye in round four and referee Kenny Bayless ruled the cut was caused by a punch. Mares, however, then outboxed Oquendo the rest of the fight. Scores were 96-94, 98-92, 98-92.

2008 Mexican Olympian Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas (20-0-1, 14 KOs) scored a third round TKO over former two-division world champion Juanma Lopez (34-4, 31 KOs) in a super featherweight bout. Vargas staggered and dropped the game but smaller Lopez in a wild round three as both fighters went to-to-toe. Lopez’ corner stopped the bout between rounds. Read full Story>>>

Calling Fact or Fiction on Possibilities for Floyd Mayweather's Next Fight

It's being written and talked about as a done deal now, but it's important to point out that at this point, Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana II remains just a rumor. In the video here where Mayweather made the big "annoucement," his revelation about Maidana was actually little more than a throw-away statement in the last 20 seconds of the interview.

So it's hardly official. Read full Story...

Mayweather: Cotto and Canelo hit harder than Maidana

By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) did a good job of beating Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) by standing and trading shots last Saturday night to earn a tough 12 round majority decision in their Showtime pay-per-view televised fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. But after the fight, Mayweather had less than glowing words to say about the hard hitting Argentinian fighter.

Mayweather Maidana Mayweather vs. Maidana saul alvarez miguel cotto marcos rene maidana floyd mayweather jr Mayweather compared Maidana to a WWE professional wrestler at the post-fight press conference, and said that he had done a good job of kneeing him and holding and hitting. Pulev isn’t in the same class as Wladimir, says Dimitrenko

Joseph Parker defeats Brian Minto in 7th round stoppage

By Jim Dower: 22-year-old heavyweight prospect Joseph Parker (9-0, 8 KO’s) stayed unbeaten tonight in stopping 39-year-old veteran Brian Minto (39-8, 25 KO’s) in a 7th round retirement to capture the interim PABA heavyweight title at the Vodafone Events Center in Manukau City, New Zealand.

The 6’4” Parker showed excellent power in dropping the smaller 5’11” Minto twice in the fight with right hands to the head in putting him down in the 5th and 7th. Minto’s corner opted not to send him out for the 8th round in order to save him from taking needless punishment. Minto likely wouldn’t have made it through the 8th had he come out for that round.

Parker stalked Minto around the ring in rounds 1-7, nailing him with huge right hands and occasional left hooks. Each time Parker would land his right hand on Minto’s head, you could hear the impact sound of the shots. It was really loud. Read full Story...

Soliman: Geale can beat Golovkin if he’s at his best

Golovkin Geale Golovkin vs. Geale gennady golovkin daniel geale By Dan Ambrose: IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman thinks #3 WBA, #5 WBO Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) has the kind of talent needed to pull off a huge upset this month in his title challenge against WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) on July 26th at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Soliman, who comes from Australia like Geale, believes that if he uses his speed along with his power, he can beat Golovkin in this fight.

So in other words, Geale will need to bring his A-game and fight the perfect fight for him to send the highly hyped Golovkin down crashing to his first defeat in front of a large HBO audience nationwide in the U.S on 7/26.

Rigondeaux Kokietgym Rigondeaux vs. Kokietgym guillermo rigondeaux By Chris Williams: With just two weeks to go before the July 19th fight between Guillermo Rigondeaux (13-0, 8 KO’s) vs. Sod Kokietgym (63-2-1, 28 KO’s) at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, in Macao, Macao S.A.R., China, tickets are still available for the card.

It’s not surprising though because by sticking the fight in Macao, China, Bob Arum of Top Rank has put superb fighters like Rigondeaux in a position where they’re not able to fight in front of large crowds in the United States.

The card, if it’s going to sell out, it’ll be due to flyweight contender Zou Shiming (4-0, 1 KO’s) fighting on in against Luis De La Rosa (23-3-1, 13 KO’s) and flyweight Brian Viloria (33-4, 19 KO’s) fighting Jose Alfredo Zuniga (11-5-1, 5 KO’s). Read full Story...

Parker still unbeaten, stops Minto in seven

BOXING NEWS

Unbeaten heavyweight Joseph Parker (9-0, 8 KOs) scored a seventh round TKO over Pennsylvanian Brian “The Beast” Minto (39-8, 25 KOs) on Saturday night at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau City, New Zealand. The normally uber-aggressive Minto fought cautiously against the much larger Parker. Parker landed most the big shots as he patiently broke down Minto. Parker floored Minto at the end of round five with a big right hand behind the ear. Parker dropped Minto again at the end of round seven. Minto’s corner stopped the fight after round seven. Parker exacted revenge from Minto for retiring Kiwi favorite Shane Cameron last year. The bout was for the interim PABA and WBO Oriental titles. After the fight, Minto stated that he entered the bout with a broken nose.

WBO #10, WBA #12 light heavyweight Robert “The Butcher” Berridge (24-1-1, 20 KOs) annihilated Rogerio Damasco (12-2-2, 12 KOs) in just 2:18 of the first round. Impressive performance by Berridge, who dropped Damasco twice in the bout, which was for the PABA and WBO Oriental belts.

2012 Olympian welterweight Jeff “The Hornet” Horn (8-0-1, 6 KOs) outclassed Fernando Ferreira da Silva (32-4-1, 24 KOs) over twelve rounds. Horn dominated every round and dropped de Silva in round twelve. Scores were 120-107 on all cards as Horn claimed the WBO Oriental welterweight title.

In a clash of unbeaten light heavyweights, Nikolas Charalampous (8-0, 5 KOs) dropped rugby player Aaron Lai (6-1, 5 KOs) four times en route to an easy six round unanimous decision. Scores were 60-50, 60-50, 61-51.

WHY MAYWEATHER VS. MAIDANA II MAKES DOLLARS AND SENSE

By Kuda Love

Earlier this week, Floyd Mayweather let one of boxing's worst kept secrets out of the bag. Mayweather announced that he will seek to extend his unbeaten record to 47-0 when he rematches Marcos Maidana for the WBA & WBC world welterweight titles on September 13th. Maidana, aggrieved at the judges decision to rule the first fight in Mayweather's favor, will get the chance to exact revenge and in the process shake up the boxing world. As a fight fan, I think there is cause to rejoice as for once, the right fight has been made.  Read full Story...

WBO orders Peter Quillin-Matt Korobov

Lem Satterfield

The WBO has ordered Peter Quillin to defend his middleweight title against Matt Korobov, giving their respective promoters, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, 30 days to negotiate a deal before a purse bid is mandated, it was announced on the website of organization President Paco Valcarcel.

The letter, posted on the site, was sent to Golden Boy Promotions Vice President and matchmaker Eric Gomez and Top Rank Vice President Carl Moretti, whose respective sides must bid at least $200,000.
In his last fight in April, Quillin (31-0, 22 knockouts) won a one-sided unanimous decision over Lukas Konecny.

A 31-year-old former Russian amateur standout, Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Jose Uzcategui, whom he dropped in the seveinth round.

'Pacquiao no longer a mythical beast'

ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines – Retired boxer and boxing trainer Jeff Mayweather claims that Manny Pacquiao is no longer the "mythical monster" of yore that tore down some of the best fighters of his era.

Mayweather, an uncle of current pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr., said it was Pacquiao’s run against Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton that made the Filipino boxer a superstar.

He, however, said that Pacquiao’s boxing prowess significantly diminished in recent years.

“Pacquiao had a short run knocking out guys and everybody jumped on his bandwagon and made him this big huge star — when he beat Cotto, Margarito, De La Hoya and Hatton. Since that time, what has he really done?” Mayweather said in an interview with "On The Ropes Boxing Radio."

He said Pacquiao’s mystique wore off after he stopped knocking out people. Read full Story...

Canelo Alvarez says he’ll silence Erislandy Lara

Lem Satterfield

Canelo Alvarez vowed to silence what he considers to be a trash-talking Erislandy Lara when they meet on July 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Mexican star also weighed in on the potential Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Marcos Maidana rematch, hoping it's not as dirty as the first bout.

Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 knockouts) spoke during a Tuesday media workout in San Diego in advance of his bout with Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs), whom he said has "talked a lot" and "disrespected all Mexicans."

"Erislandy Lara has talked a lot of trash, and that's why he's gotten this opportunity," said Alvarez, who turns 24 on July 18. "He said a lot of things in the media and on Twitter and in various other social media." Read full Story...

Canelo Alvarez wants to take Mexican dates from Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Lem Satterfield

Floyd Mayweather Jr. traditionally competes on the weekends of Mexican holidays Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day in May and September, respectively.

In his past two majority decision victories, Mayweather (46-0, 26 knockouts) added Maidana's WBA welterweight belt to THE RING and WBC championships he already owned and unified Saul Alvarez's WBC junior middleweight title with his RING and WBC championships.

But during a Wednesday conference call promoting his July 12 bout against southpaw Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 knockouts), Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) said he intends to regain the dates that he feels belong to his Mexican countrymen.

"Yes, of course, I want to re-take those dates and bring them back," said Alvarez, who turns 24 on July 18. "Those dates are Mexican dates. For next year, I will be fighting and I want to be fighting on those dates." Read full Story...

Erislandy Lara: “I don’t owe (Canelo Alvarez) nothing (but) a left hand”

Lem Satterfield

Erislandy Lara once called Canelo Alvarez "a baby" for not accepting his challenge. The Cuban southpaw also interrupted Alvarez during a post-fight press conference and generally "talked a lot" and "disrespected all Mexicans," according to Alvarez.

"The press conference where Lara got up on stage, that definitely bothered me," said Alvarez, during a recent interview. "I'm not one of those fighters to do that type of thing. Him talking so much was the straw that broke the camel's back. That's why we're fighting now."

Although Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 knockouts) agreed to fight Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) in a July 12 Showtime Pay Per View headliner at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Lara still gives Alvarez little credit for taking the fight. Read full Story...

Mayweather: I'm fighting Maidana

By Dan Rafael | ESPN.com

Two months have passed since pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. outpointed Marcos Maidana in a very tough welterweight unification fight on May 3 in Las Vegas, and the figures for the Showtime PPV fight have yet to be announced -- even though Showtime Sports boss Stephen Espinoza and Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe both said that they would be.

But don't hold your breath, especially now that the formal announcement of Mayweather's Sept. 13 Showtime PPV fight, likely to be a rematch against Maidana, is probably just days away.

Mayweather said during a red carpet interview at Sunday night's BET Awards that he would be facing Maidana again.

"Sept. 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana-Floyd Mayweather, part II," Mayweather said. "And then in May, I'm fighting in May and I'll have a big surprise for y'all." Read full Story...

FLOYD MAYWEATHER RANKS 7TH ON FORBES 2014 LIST OF THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL CELEBRITIES

By Ben Thompson

FLOYD MAYWEATHER RANKS 7TH ON FORBES 2014 LIST OF THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL CELEBRITIESUndefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather has cracked the top 10 of Forbes 2014 Celebrity 100. The list reportedly measures a mix of money, fame and impact to rank the most powerful celebrities in the world. Mayweather was ranked 7th on the list thanks in large part to the fact that other than Tiger Woods, he's the only athlete to earn more than $100 million according to Forbes' list of highest-paid athletes.

Singer and actress Beyonce Knowles topped the list after having one of the biggest years of her career, which included $115 million in earnings. Coincidentally, Mayweather's influential adviser, Al Haymon, once reportedly had ties to Beyonce, but that's another story. Sandwiched between Beyonce and Mayweather are (in order): LeBron James (#2), Dr. Dre (#3), Oprah Winfry (#4), Ellen DeGeneres (#5), and Jay-Z (#6). Read full Story...
