Bradley vs. Cotto at a catch-weight of 156

By Dan Ambrose:

Bradley Cotto Bradley vs. Cotto timothy bradley miguel cotto Former WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley could be fighting for the WBC middleweight title against Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) in December without being ranked in the division, says Steve Kim. There’s still nothing official yet, but the word is that Bradley has been offered a fight against the 33-year-old Cotto at a catch-weight of 156 pounds to accommodate him.

Bradley has never fought above welterweight before, but now he’ll be skipping the junior middleweight division and going straight to middleweight to fight for the title against WBC champ Miguel Cotto. Read full Story...

Pacquiao vs. Khan: The Wild Card War

June 29, 2014

“It’s hard to see him older and getting worse. Freddie, with the Parkinson’s Disease, he was struggling with instructions and couldn’t move as well.”

Amir Khan, in late Summer 2012 after getting KTFO by Danny Garcia

Wow Amir. That like... it stinks.

With Roach, Pacquiao would utilize his unique gifts to defeat Amir Khan.I read those comments and it leads you to make that real scrunchy face. The one you make after your 300lb cousin annihilated the bathroom after feeling the effects of Taco Bell.

No spray.

No Warning.

No police tape covering the damn door.

However prescient Khan thought his remarks to be - after abandoning a Freddie Roach who was about as cold as a homeless man caught in a Chicago winter at the time - I wonder how he approaches them now roughly two years later. Read full Story...

Top Rank president compares Crawford to Mayweather Jr

By Michael Lieberman: Well, you knew sooner or later someone was going to get around to saying that WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford (24-0, 17 KOs) was the next Floyd Mayweather Jr or at least compare him to the famous fighter, but it was surprising that it happened so soon without Crawford having taken on a really serious threat.

Last night, Crawford defeated a fighter who was two divisions smaller than him in former IBF/WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-1, 16 KO’s) in a 9th round knockout at the CenturyLink Center, in Omaha, Nebraska, USA.

Crawford, 26, was a favorite going into the fight due to his age, size, activity level, and the fact that Gamboa hadn’t fought in over a year, and he was no longer looking sharp at this point in his career like he had when he was younger. Read full Story...

Erislandy Lara: I’m going to school Canelo

Before he steps into the ring to face Mexican-superstar Canelo Alvarez, WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara worked out for the media and talked about his upcoming PPV main event on “Honor & Glory”.

Lara on if he was surprised that Canelo took the fight…

“Originally I thought he would never take the fight because I confronted him in person and he said, ‘No this is not how you make fights.’ Then after the fans saw that he was ducking me on Twitter, he had no choice but to be a man and take the challenge.”

Lara on what he has to do differently in this fight…

“Nothing has to change. I just need to do the same things I always do and train. If I focus on training to win, there’s no one in the world that can beat me.” Read full Story...

Round 9 Video : Terence Crawford knockout Yuriorkis Gamboa

Crawford vs Gamboa results: Terence Crawford drops Gamboa four times, wins 9th round TKO

Terence Crawford not only handed Yuriorkis Gamboa his first pro loss tonight, but he stopped him after four knockdowns in what turned out to be a pretty dominant, potentially star-making performance.

Terence Crawford looked a little surprised by the speed of Yuriorkis Gamboa to start the night, but once he got the timing down, he turned the tide and took over tonight's HBO Boxing After Dark main event in front of a raucous hometown crowd in Omaha, Nebraska, knocking Gamboa down four times en route to a ninth round stoppage to retain his WBO lightweight title.

Crawford (24-0, 17 KO) may have lost the first four rounds (BLH gave Gamboa three of the first four), but in round five he decked Gamboa (23-1, 16 KO) hard, and took over the fight from there. To his immense credit, Gamboa never gave up on himself, and perhaps feeling that he was wearing down and being overpowered by a very good, physically bigger man, he went for broke, swinging for the fences, which fight fans always ask to see out of guys who don't look like they're going to win.

In the end, Gamboa was dropped three more times, once in the eighth round and twice in the ninth, leading to referee Genaro Rodriguez stopping the fight. Read full Story...

Atlas picks Crawford to easily beat Gamboa tonight

By Dan Ambrose:

In what could be a big jinx, ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas made his prediction of tonight’s clash between WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford (23-0, 16 KO’s) and Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO’s) by picking Crawford to easily beat the 32-year-old Gamboa in their fight on HBO at the CenturyLink Center, in Omaha, Nebraska, USA.

“I like Terence Crawford. I like him to dominate,” Atlas said. “He’s the bigger guy; the naturally bigger guy, a natural lightweight. He’s good sized. Gamboa has been for the most part a featherweight. Gamboa hasn’t looked good in his last several fights. To me, there’s been a drop off in the performance of Gamboa. He just doesn’t look like the same confident fighter. He looks like a guy with an identity crisis. Read full Story...

Crawford-Gamboa early action: Zewski stops Doku Jr

By Jim Dower:

Undefeated welterweight prospect Mikael Zewski (24-0, 19 KO’s) showed good power in stopping Prince Doku Jr (18-6, 12 KO’s) in the 4th round on Saturday night to capture the vacant NABF welterweight title at the CenturyLink Center, in Omaha, Nebraska, USA.

Zewski, 25, knocked Doku Jr down with a flurry of shots after hurting him with a big left hook while trading with him on the ropes. Doku Jr was then counted out by referee Jay Nady at 1:05 of the round. Read full Story...

50 Cent Talks Gamboa Vs. Crawford & Why Floyd Mayweather Won’t Work With Bob Arum

by Keith Nelson Jr (@JusAire)

50cent-mayweatherJune 28 has been a long time coming for 50 Cent. Ever since launching his boxing company, SMS Promotions, 50 Cent has tried to make the biggest fights for his most well-known commodity, Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa. He’s failed twice at making fights with Top Rank’s Mikey Garcia, as the bouts fell through over purse split squabbles.

Finally, the persistence paid off with the emergence of Terence Crawford, who secured the biggest win of his career in March when he defeated Ricky Burns for the WBO lightweight title. A few years ago, Gamboa would have been a clear favorite. Now with inactivity (two fights in the last two years) and giving up size to a skilled counter-puncher, many are picking Crawford to hand Gamboa his first defeat on Saturday night’s HBO card.

Despite the odds, 50 Cent isn’t worried. In fact, he’s excited. For the G Unit mogul, Gamboa isn’t a fighter he promotes. He is 50’s lethal weapon of choice to legitimize SMS Promotions, and in turn shake up the boxing landscape. Read full Story...

ERROL SPENCE, JR. IMPRESSES WITH RESOUNDING UNANIMOUS DECISION VICTORY OVER RONALD CRUZ

Dominic Wade Remains Unbeaten With Unanimous Decision Victory Over Nick Brinson On ShoBox: The New Generation

LAS VEGAS (June 27, 2014) - Undefeated Errol Spence, Jr. didn't lose a round and may have made the transition from prospect to contender in a dominating unanimous decision victory (100-90 three times) over the durable Ronald Cruz in the main event of ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME® from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Spence (13-0, 10 KOs) was remarkably efficient with his power punches, landing 282 shots compared to Cruz's 65 at a rate of 58 percent. Looking like a potential future world champion, the 2012 U.S. Olympian was technically sound and sharp with his punches, picking apart the courageous Cruz (20-4, 15 KOs) as he went past the eighth round for the first time in his career. Conditioning certainly wasn't an issue for the 24-year-old, who threw more punches in the 10th and final round (114) than he did in any other round in the fight. Read full Story...

Why Errol Spence Believes He's Ready to Be a Boxing Star

By Kevin McRae , Featured Columnist

Why Errol Spence Believes He's Ready to Be a Boxing StarErrol Spence Jr. is ready to take the next step on the path to boxing stardom.

The 24-year-old former United States Olympian will return to the ring Friday night in Las Vegas, taking on young veteran Ronald Cruz in the first scheduled 10-round fight of his professional career.

It’s being billed as a step-up fight for the Texas native, and he’s well aware of the increased challenge level that Cruz will provide, but it’s something he welcomes.

“I think he’s probably the toughest guy I’ve faced. He’s a real tough, durable fighter, and he’s going to come to fight. I know he’s a pressure fighter, and I think he’ll be my toughest test to date,” Spence said Thursday.

“I think everything in this sport is about timing and preparation, and I think I’m taking this fight at the right time in my career. I’m going to show up tomorrow, and it’s going to be a great fight.” Read full Story...

Terence Crawford-Yuriokis Gamboa May Ignite Bigger Sparks than Canelo Alvarez-Erislandy Lara

By Ivan G. Goldman

Here’s a question for you. Will the Showtime pay-per-view bout between Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara on July 12 be a better fight than the HBO showdown this weekend between Terence Crawford and Yuriokis Gamboa? If it is, that will be the exception that proves the rule, because most of the really sensational contests of the last couple of decades were given away to subscribers.

There’s no direct correlation between excitement and pay-per-view dollars. In fact, the pay-per-view economic model is to boxing what a dime bag is to a junky. It’s a quick fix that digs the sport into a deeper hole, driving away both existing and potential fans. PPV cards are just another example of short-term corporate thinking, a rampant disease these days.

Oddsmakers have favored the house fighters, Canelo and Crawford, in both contests.
Interesting that the main events this weekend and July 12 both feature Cubans. You could probably fit all the American fans of Cuban fighters in a Greyhound bus. Canelo is in tough against Lara, 19-1-2 (12 KOs), but don’t expect him to break any PPV records against this opponent. There is no meaningful title on the line. Read full Story...

Boxing Legend Evander Holyfied Officially Retires

By Sean Crose

Holyfield oil painting by John Murawski www.myartnsoul.blogspot.comForty-four wins. Ten losses. Two draws. That is the official and apparent final record of former heavyweight and cruiserweight kingpin Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfied. Like many greats, however, Holyfield’s final record doesn’t do the man justice. For Holyfield, in the unfortunate tradition of other ring titans, lingered in the ring for too long.

Not that it really matters to fans of the sweet science. Holyfield won’t be remember for double digits in his loss column. He’ll be remembered as one of the greatest heavyweight champions ever – count on it. The man fought the best of his time and place, often repeatedly, and usually came out on top.

Dwight Mohammad Qawi, Pinklon Thomas, James Douglas, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, Michael Moorer, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis. Evander Holyfield fought and defeated all of those men, except for one. And the one he never beat, the great Lennox Lewis, was an opponent I believe he met about five years too late. California lawmakers honor Oscar De La Hoya

California lawmakers on Thursday honored Oscar De La Hoya, nicknamed the Golden Boy of boxing, for his leadership and contributions to the state.

De La Hoya, the son of Mexican immigrants, received proclamations from Sen. Kevin de Leon and former Assembly Speaker John Perez, both Democrats from Los Angeles. They said De La Hoya has helped California's economy by creating Golden Boy Promotions, the nation's first boxing promotional company owned by a Hispanic-American.

He also has invested in his community of East Los Angeles by establishing a foundation to support a charter school, a medical center and after-school programs to lead youth away from gangs and drugs.

De La Hoya, an Olympic gold medalist and winner of 10 world titles, thanked lawmakers for the recognition. Earlier this month, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Read full Story...

6-foot-6 Chinese boxer to make pro debut in Nevada

Zhilei Zhang, right, fights in a super heavyweight bout at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

A 6-foot-6 Chinese boxer who won the super heavyweight silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will make his professional debut in August.

Zhang Zhilei will fight in the heavyweight bout Aug. 8 in Fallon, Nevada, on a card televised by ESPN. His opponent has not been determined.

The Beijing Games also started Aug. 8. The number eight represents good luck in Chinese, and Zhang's friends have asked if that's the reason he's making his pro debut then. Zhang laughs at that notion. He says it's ''just the luck of the schedule.''

Zhang is promoted by Dino Duva's Dynasty Boxing. He has former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield as an adviser. Says Holyfield: ''I can't make him a champion. He's got to want to be a champion.''

Kell Brook waiting on new date to fight IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter

Kell Brook is waiting to discover if a new date will be set for his world title shot against American Shawn Porter after seeing a bout scheduled for August 9 fall through.

Kell Brook: Waiting on a new date to fight IBF champion Shawn PorterThe unbeaten Sheffield fighter has endured plenty of frustration over the last two years in his attempts to fight for the welterweight crown.

That seemed to have come to an end earlier this month when Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn appeared to have secured a shot at IBF champion Porter at the Brooklyn Barclay Center on August 9.

However, both Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson are now scheduled to fight on that bill.

Hearn insists Brook’s part of the contract has been signed, and the IBF, who have Brook as the mandatory challenger, has ordered the contest to take place before September 7.

Porter, who could be stripped of his title if he fails to comply with the deadline, has been mooted as a potential opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr but Hearn does not believe that contest will materialise. Read full Story...

British light-welterweight: Willie Limond beats Curtis Woodhouse on points in Glasgow

It was a case of third time lucky for Willie Limond as he finally achieved his British title dream with a stylish performance against Curtis Woodhouse in Glasgow.

The 35-year-old twice floored Woodhouse with some powerful upper cuts on his way to a points victory to take the British light-welterweight belt.

"It was a great fight and Curtis pushed me all the way. I think I needed Curtis to do that to make me perform."
Willie Limond
Limond, who also retained his Commonwealth title, was eight points ahead on the referee's card and five ahead with one of the judges at ringside, the other surprisingly scoring it a draw.

“It's taken me 13 years to get it,” a delighted Limond told Sky Sports. “It was a great fight and Curtis pushed me all the way. I think I needed Curtis to do that to make me perform.

“I'd watched every one of Curtis' fights since he'd turned pro. I feel I performed the best I could at the age I'm at.” Read full Story...

Dejan Zlaticanin beats Ricky Burns to win WBC International lightweight title in Glasgow

Ricky Burns: knocked to the floor by Dejan Zlaticanin during the opening round
Ricky Burns: knocked to the floor by Dejan Zlaticanin during the opening round

Ricky Burns failed to recover from a first-minute knockdown as he fell on points to Dejan Zlaticanin in their battle for the WBC International lightweight title in Glasgow.

Burns finished the fight at Braehead Arena strongly, but his good late work was not enough to secure victory on the cards as he went down 115-113, 113-115, 115-113 in a split decision in favour of the hard-hitting Montenegrin.

Zlaticanin, who became a father earlier in the day, started like a man possessed and caught Burns with a shot to the chin inside the first 20 seconds, a partisan home crowd stunned into silence.

The knockdown seemed to affect Burns over the first half of the fight, with the southpaw continuing to sit back and pick him off with big punches, some of the haymaker variety but still proving effective.

Burns, beaten by Terence Crawford in his last fight in March, began to fight back during the middle rounds and started to make back some of the losses he had clearly suffered earlier on.

And that pattern continued until the end, with Burns pressing Zlaticanin back and his opponent waiting for rare chances to throw another long, looping left hand. Read full Story...

Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Boxing Fight 2014: Dubai Rumored to Stage Dream Fight? [VIDEO]

Floyd MayweatherRumors have been rife that the dream fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is now in the works, following reports that the Prince of United Arab Emirates will bankroll a showdown between the top boxers in the world.
This stemmed from reports that came out last week saying the UAE President and Royal Family has been working to make the much talked about Pacquaio vs Mayweather dream fight, a reality.

IBTimes UK said that Prince Amir Shafipour was apparently allowed to initiate talks with both the camps of Mayweather and Pacquiao. Shafipour is a businessman and fight promoter in the middle east and he was reported all set to draw up a deal for the much-awaited fight in the ring. Read full story

Khan: A fight between me and Pacquiao is a 50-50 fight

By Chris Williams: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KO’s) says a fight between him and WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) would be a toss-up due to his size, height, and reach advantage over the 35-year-old Filipino fighter. Khan says he’s sparred with Pacquiao, and that he knows firsthand that he struggles against boxers.

Khan was obviously being modest about what happened during their sparring sessions together, but we saw one of them on Youtube, and you could see that Khan was whipping Pacquiao worse than I’ve ever seen before. Even Juan Manuel Marquez never did to Pacquiao what Khan did to him during that sparring session. Read full story

Lara will use some of what Mayweather did against Canelo, says Shields

Ronnie Shields, the trainer for WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s), says they’ve studied Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr from last year and noticed some things that the 23-year-old Canelo did wrong in that fight. They plan on using some of the things that Mayweather did to the flat-footed Canelo to out-box him next month in their fight on July 12th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
“Lara is the master of making you adapt to his style,” Shields said to esnewsreporting.com. “Canelo is going to say ‘Ah oh, maybe I messed up; maybe I should have listened to my manager and not went to that fight. I should have gone to another fight.’ We’re going to take some of the things that Mayweather did and add it to our game plan for Canelo,” Shields said.

The main thing that Lara will need to do is to make sure he focuses on being defensive the entire time, and not standing directly in front of the red-haired Canelo. If he can stay out of reach the entire fight, and get Canelo into just throwing single shots, Lara will easily win this fight.
Canelo doesn’t have the hand speed or the mobility to beat a fighter like Lara in a pot shot type of contest. Canelo also can’t fall back on the same game plan that he used against Austin Trout last year in April where Canelo retreated to the ropes and used head movement and occasional big punches to win the fight. That worked against Trout, but just barely despite the lopsided scoring given to Canelo for that fight.
Canelo can’t run out of gas in this fight like he did against Trout, and he definitely can’t retreat to the ropes for rest breaks if he wants to win. Canelo will need to put constant pressure on Lara and cut off the ring on him all night to win. Can he do this? I’m not sure that he can judging by his efforts against Mayweather and Trout. Canelo is just too flat-footed and slow on his feet. He looks great against slow guys that stand in front of him like Alfredo Angulo, but he’s very average against fighters with speed that can move.

Golden Boy seeking damages from Schaefer

By Karl Freitag

Multiple sources are reporting that Golden Boy Promotions is seeking $50 million in damages from former CEO Richard Schaefer. The case will not go to court, but instead will be decided by arbitration.

Things turned sour this year between Golden Boy President Oscar de la Hoya and Schaefer, who had been the Golden Boy CEO from its beginning in 2002. Schaefer ran the company while Oscar spent several years battling personal demons, but this year Oscar returned and decided he wanted to take a more active role. Schaefer resigned from Golden Boy on June 2.

While the specifics of the complaint against Schaefer aren’t known, it’s believed that any alleged damages would revolve around Schaefer often promoting major Golden Boy events that benefited the careers of Al Haymon-managed fighters who were not under contract to Golden Boy.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. should move his date and fight Amir Khan

By Mohammad Malik:

Mayweather Khan Mayweather vs. Khan floyd mayweather jr amir khan We have about 11 weeks left until Floyd Mayweather’s next fight on September 13th. With the date approaching fast, Floyd Mayweather Jr. needs to pick an opponent soon in order to give himself enough time to promote the fight.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has had the luxury of dictating the terms of his fights for many years now, and it is no secret that the fighters are willing to bend over backwards to get a shot at the No.1 Pound for Pound fighter in the world. Not to mention, the biggest pay check of their career.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still in the driver’s seat, except, the current situation cannot be exactly to his liking. Let’s take a look at the two main issues possibly halting the announcement of his next fight: the recent parting of Richard Schaefer from Golden Boy Promotions and the lack of viable/quality opponents for his next fight on September 13th.

He has never made a secret about his not so great relationship with Oscar De La Hoya, so it remains to be seen if he will choose to work with Golden Boy Promotions for his next fight. We have already heard some conflicting statements from Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his team regarding the future of their relationship.

Obviously, there are issues that need to be sorted out and it is easy to see that the situation is not ideal for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his team. There is a lot that we don’t know in regards to the contractual obligations of some of the fighters being represented by Golden Boy Promotions. So, it is quite possible that Floyd and his team may not have a choice but to work with Golden Boy Promotions if he chooses to fight one of their fighters. And that is certainly easier said than done at the moment.

The dearth of viable/quality opponents is certainly not helping the situation. Only fighters you can possibly make an argument for include: Manny Pacquiao, Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter, Keith Thurman, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia and Miguel Cotto. We already know the fight with Manny Pacquiao is simply not possible at the moment for various reasons. The list of reasons can be quite long, but for the sake of argument, I’ll just mention the reported differences between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Top Rank owner Bob Arum as the main reason, and stop there.

The next fighter on the list of possible opponents is Marcos Maidana. After watching the replay of Marcos Maidana and Floyd Mayweather Jr., it was easy to see that Floyd Mayweather Jr. won the fight quite convincingly. The fight looked a lot closer when I was watching it live, but it was evident the second time that Floyd Mayweather Jr. out boxed Maidana in the last 8 rounds. I think the rematch wouldn’t offer anything new, and more than likely, Floyd Mayweather Jr. would choose to just move and box. Plus, if the rumors are to be true then the fight didn’t live up to the expectations and it is said that the pay per view numbers’ failed to cross the million mark.

Therefore, you can cross Maidana’s name off the list. The next name on the list of possible opponents is Shawn Porter. It was widely reported today that Shawn Porter has signed his contract for his mandatory IBF Welterweight title defense and the fight is expected to take place on September 6th. So, you can cross his name off the list. Same goes for Danny Garcia who will be fighting on August 9th at Barclays Center. It is safe to say that he won’t be back in the ring a month after to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I really like Keith Thurman and I think he is the real deal. He has pretty much dominated whoever was put in front of him, but at the same time, he has yet to fight and beat an elite fighter. Plus, he doesn’t have a big following at the moment and that is a good enough reason for Floyd to not consider him as an opponent for his next fight. So, you can also cross his name off the list. Now that leaves us with two names: Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan. I wouldn’t mind seeing a rematch between Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr., and I have no doubt the fight would do well in terms of par per view buys.

The issue is whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. would want to fight at 154 and take a risk against a dangerous fighter like Cotto – whom he has already beaten. There are also reports that Bob Arum is interested in matching Cotto against Timothy Bradley later this year. It is also reported that Miguel Cotto is on vacation and plans on making his return in December. With all said, my gut feeling is that Floyd Maweather Jr. will not be fighting Miguel Cotto in September. So, you can cross his name off the list too.

Now that leaves us with one name: Amir Khan. We all know Amir Khan has been asking for a fight with Mayweather Jr. for a while now. He as has a massive following in the U.K and he has fought and beaten some credible fighters in the U.S. To say the least, he certainly makes sense business wise.

They say that styles make fight, and I personally believe that Amir Khan’s style would make the fight interesting. He’s got fast hands, great foot work, and the question marks over his chin would only thicken the plot. The issue is Amir Khan will not return to the ring until November or December of this year. He will be observing Ramadan until late July and wants adequate time to prepare himself for the fight.

I think it only makes sense for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to move the date two months ahead and pick Amir Khan as his next opponent. We are only talking about 2 months here, and it is not like moving two months ahead would take the negotiating power away from Floyd Mayweather Jr. He would still get to dictate the terms of the fight as he is still the bigger name. At the end of the day, it would simply be a business decision and not an ego thing.

Boxing News 2014: Top rank to Announce September 2014 Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, Claims Korean Web Site

By Vittorio Hernandez | June 27, 2014 12:00 AM EST

The dream match between pound-for-pound king contenders Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao will reportedly take place in September 2014, Kdramastars, a Korean drama, movie and celebrity news site reported, citing a reliable source from 78Sports TV and Latino Post.
The report claims that Top Rank, where Pacquiao has a contract, will officially announce the much anticipated bout. The Web site said that the same source correctly leaked the fight between Robert Guerrero and Saul Canelo Alvarez months before the official announcement, citing a report from Philippine Star.

The unnamed 78Sports anchor confirmed that both boxers have agreed to the fight which is now guaranteed.  The anchor said, "Everything else that you will be just theatrics from here on out. But the fight is already done."

On Tuesday, Mayweather was quoted as saying his choice is limited between Amir Khan and Miguel Cotto, but Pacquiao is definitely out of the picture.

Although the anchor did not provide more details, there is a possibility the dream match is the handiwork of Prince Amir Shafipour of the United Arab Emirates who has promised to make the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout a reality in 2015, to be held in Dubai.

And with UAE petro dollars at work, a guaranteed purse higher than the S40 million Mayweather got on May 3 could have convinced Money May to change his mind and agree to meet Pacquiao inside the ring.

Sept 13 is the scheduled fight of Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, but he has not officially announced his opponent.

The bout could be the biggest in boxing history, expected to get break pay-per-view revenues in past fights, or the report could be the mother of all hoax stories as the Latino Post story on boxing were on the possible opponents of both boxers. On the other hand, the Philippine Star article was about Pacquiao being a nominee for the Best Fighter of the Year at ESPN's Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards. Both articles on Thursday did not carry any news about the so-called dream match.

Fight Preview: Terence Crawford vs Yuriorkis Gamboa

The boxing weekend is headlined by a special treat, when two undefeated boxers will face off Saturday night in Omaha  Nebraska.

Fight Preview: Terence Crawford vs Yuriorkis GamboaTerence Crawford 23-0 (16) battles Yuriorkis Gamboa 23-0 (16).  While these fighters boast the same record, their paths into this fight has been anything but similar.

Crawford has been active and honing his skills.

Fighting three times in 2013 and once already this calendar year. Crawford's star is on the rise. Gamboa, however, who was once a rising star has been fighting in relative obscurity and has not laced up the boxing gloves in over a year.

Gamboa has also developed the tag of a “ducker” since his meteoric rise in 2011.  On record saying he was not interested in fighting Brandon Rios, and blamed for the inability to land a fight with Mikey Garcia.

It is unfair to put all the blame on him for not fighting Garcia, there is plenty of blame to go around there. It is evident; however, that Gamboa's career has made a turn for the worst since signing with promoter 50 Cent.

You would be hard pressed to name the two fighters Gamboa has actually faced in the last two years. Gamboa is now in the biggest fight of his life, on the B side, against a rising star, in his hometown. Can somebody say mismanagement?

The good new is if Gamboa wins, not even the G- Unit rapper can spoil such a sweet victory.

It kind of reminds me of John Travolta, who was once the biggest star in the world, and disappeared, mostly due to poor career choices. Travolta gained a second chance as an A list celebrity when director Quenten Trantino snatched up the “washed up” Travolta, to play Vincent Vega. The former Saturday Night Fever star grabbed the opportunity by the horns and never looked backed. Proving he was anything but washed up.

Gamboa is not washed up either and could be very dangerous Saturday night in Omaha.

Terence Crawford finds himself in a peculiar role for a boxer, returning home.

When a boxer who fights in front of his hometown it often turns out to be tumultuous instead of glorious.

Evander Holyfield suffered his first knockdown as a pro when he returned to Atlanta to fight the less regarded Bert Cooper. Devon Alexander had a tough time, with a very lackluster effort, against underdog Andriy Kotelnik when he fought in his stomping grounds of Missouri.

Both fighters won on the record, but lost a lot of luster to their star status after these performances.

Alexander, who was given a gift decision in the eyes of a lot of observers, spoke to me about the pressures of wanting to look spectacular in front of a frenzied crowd who would elect you for Mayor if your name appeared on the ballot.

Alexander also cited a week of annoyances that would not be present if not fighting in your own backyard.

So if you are team Crawford, buyer before. While it may seem like gravy fighting in front of your adored home crowd (especially after having to travel all the way to Scotland in your last fight) the gravy might be spoiled and taste more like sandy mud.

This fight will be determined on how Crawford handles the intangibles that come with returning home and, if Gamboa has enough spices in his own pantry to spoil the head chef’s broth.

There is enough intrigue in this fight for all to tune in and find out which dish will be best served.

The smart pick is Crawford here. He has been more active and has faced the tougher opposition and will likely get the benefit of the doubt with the judges in close rounds.

However, there is a little man inside me who keeps telling me Gamboa is going to seize the moment and showcase his brilliant skills and put him back in the fray of boxing stardom.

Although, I must cite another buyer beware, as the little man inside of me has not be as golden as the one of the legendary Edward G. Robinson.

Whenever two top flight boxers risk there O against each other it is always a treat for the boxing fans, who, often have to eat a mud sandwich of their own, at the expense of the business of boxing.

Roach: Cotto would KO Mayweather now

Cotto Mayweather II Cotto vs. Mayweather II miguel cotto freddie roach floyd mayweather jr By Chris Williams: Miguel Cotto’s win over WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s) has trainer Freddie Roach and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum both believing that Cotto is a new man and is better than ever was before. And they both believe that Cotto would beat Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) right now if he were to agree to give him a second fight.
It’s hard to understand why Mayweather would fight Cotto again because he already beat him by a lopsided 12 round decision in 2012, and Mayweather doesn’t waste time going over old ground to keep fighting the same guy over and over and over again like some fighters do. Mayweather moves on each time he picks up a pelt.

When asked if Cotto could beat Mayweather now, Roach said “He knocks Mayweather out.”
The look on Roach’s face when he said that was priceless. He looked almost angry. Roach looks like he really wants the Mayweather fight for Cotto, but the thing is it’s already over with after Mayweather took Cotto’s scalp in 2012. Cotto gave it his best shot but he didn’t have the talent to do the job, and he ended up getting beaten and almost knocked out by Mayweather.
“I think his legs are gone,” Roach said to the media about Mayweather. “He doesn’t move anymore. He says he wants to please the fans. I think that’s [expletive]. I think he’s shot. I don’t think he’ll fight any of my guys.”
For a shot fighter, Mayweather sure did look good in beating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September, didn’t he? I would favor the 23-year-old Canelo over Cotto any day of the week. Cotto could throw left hooks all night long, and I still believe Canelo will knock him out within 8 rounds in an easier fight than his win over Alfredo Angulo. If Mayweather was a shot fighter, then how is it he beat Canelo, Robert Guerrero and Marcos Maidana in his last three fights?
Roach obviously would like to get the Cotto-Mayweather II fight, because it would be a substitute for the fight that he failed to get with Mayweather-Pacquiao fight not happening, but I don’t think it would make any difference. Cotto would still likely get clowned by Mayweather, and Roach’s advice would be useless for Cotto because of the adjustments that Mayweather would be constantly making during each round. Cotto would need to wait until the ends of each round for Roach to tell him something like ‘move your head more,’ but Mayweather will adapt to things like that in the opening seconds of each round and end up dominating Cotto.
